About Us
Located near the New Hampshire/Massachusetts border,
George R. Cairns and Sons, Inc. is a heavy highway General
Contractor, constructing roads, bridges, utility installation,
site work, and unique specialty projects throughout
New England. 
After working for several General Contractors in the
Merrimack River Valley of Massachusetts during the 1960’s,
George R. Cairns founded Cairns Excavation in 1969.
He started out as a one-man excavation company, with his
Gradall constructing swimming pools. Eventually, George worked his way into larger projects in the 1970’s, including the MBTA Orange Line project in Boston and constructing seawalls in Boston Harbor after the Blizzard of ’78.  
George and his wife started George R Cairns and Sons and incorporated the company in 1980. At the same time, their three sons Robert, Garry, and Glenn
became employees of the company. In 1985, the brothers
took over the daily operations of the company. In 1992, the
brothers purchased the company from their parents,
expanding the daily construction operations to incorporate
large highway and site projects. In 2015, Glenn became
President, purchasing the company from his brothers and 
expanding the company to the heavy highway General 
Contracting corporation that it is today.
